Lost-wax casting

The lost-wax casting process is an ancient and historical one. Used in Mesopotamia over 5,000 years ago, the process was also used in every major culture in Europe, Asia and Africa all the way to our present days. Even though new technologies had been incorporated to the process, the basic steps of lost-wax casting remain the same from ancient times.

The making of Vitrail sconce

Inspired by the magnificent strained glasses found in cathedrals throughout France, Vitrail sconce is a combination of Brutalist texture, bronze and colored cast-crystal mounted on a bronze custom-made back plate.

The process starts out with a sketch. Then a wax of that concept is produced.
With the lost-wax process, the wax is then cast in bronze. Then, the bronze casting is chased and polished. Once the bronze is ready, custom-made waxes are created to pour amber and violet cast-crystals inserts. Once the cast crystals are made, the patination process starts. Finally, once Vitrail sconce is patinated, amber and violet cast-crystals are mounted along with the bronze back plate.

The making of Quadravi Brutalist sconce

Influenced by the works of the Russian Suprematist movement, the Quadravi Brutalist sconce is a rectangular and square geometric composition. Texture was added to these geometric forms to provide the work with a level of intricacy and detail. The juxtaposition of simple geometric forms and textured surface creates a work that is contradictory and harmonious at the same time. A large amber cast-crystal insert was added to the central panel to provide a warm and clear lighting, as well as a custom-made bronze back plate that enhances the sculptural quality of the work.

Once the bronze is ready, a custom-made wax is created to pour the amber cast-crystal inserts. Once the cast crystal is made, the patination process starts. Finally, once the Quadravi sconce is patinated, amber cast-crystals are mounted along with the bronze back plate.
